Speech therapy at home for adults. How does it work?

Speech and language therapy can provide life-changing treatment, support and care for adults who have difficulties with communication, eating, drinking and swallowing. Doing this in the comfort of your own home can often be less stressful and means you can fit in your sessions around your schedule and lifestyle.

Is speech therapy for adults worth doing?

Yes! No age is too old for speech therapy at home, and it is never too late to start working towards meeting your communication goals. Improving your speech, language, and communication skills can benefit someone of any age and can help you to excel in all areas of your life and boost your confidence. Or, recover from speech and communication problems as a result of Long Covid, Stroke and Traumatic Brain Injury as well as more progressive conditions such as Parkinson's Disease, Motor Neurone disease and Dementia.

Speech therapy at home exercises:

When we work with private adult patients, in their homes or online, we will often give some homework exercises to help you to practice in between sessions. Doing speech therapy exercises at home can really help your progress. It can be hard as adults to find the time to do the ‘homework’ and it may be that we have to re-establish good homework habits to set your self up for better success.

Here’s some great tips to get the most out of your speech therapy at home:

Tip 1: Plan Your Time

Put homework on the calendar like any other important appointment. Pick a time of day when you have energy and can focus. It may be best to choose a time when there aren’t too many other people around so you can focus.

Tip 2: Plan Your Space

Find a place in your home that’s comfortable for working in, but not too comfortable to do your work as you may feel too relaxed! You don’t want to be disturbed either so ideally pick an area away from too many distractions. Background noise makes it difficult to focus too, so turn off the TV or radio when you do your homework.

Tip 3: Have a partner

A communication partner can help when doing your speech therapy exercises at home. A helper can let you know whether an answer is correct or clear and provide cues for you if you struggle.

So, if you or a loved one are looking for support with speech therapy at home for adults, then please reach out for a friendly chat.
